Title:  Improving Canadian Family Physician Knowledge and Performance in Safe Prescribing of Opioids for Chronic Non-Cancer Pain

Principal Investigator:  Dr. Andrea Furlan, University Health Network

Sponsor:  Health Canada

Ethics:  Approved by the University Health Network Research Ethics Board

Background:
Opioid prescribing patterns vary widely, and do not always follow current guidelines. There has been very little work to measure physician adherence to opioid prescribing guidelines or to study interventions to improve prescribing practices.

Purpose:
The purpose of the project is to improve Canadian family physicians’ knowledge and performance in safe prescribing of opioids using the Canadian Guideline for Safe and Effective Use of Opioids for Non-Cancer Pain.

Design:
This project is an evaluation of a pilot self-assessment package, using educational and quality improvement tools for opioid prescribing in primary care settings, including:
1. Online Opioid Self-Assessment Program (SAP), including the Opioid Knowledge Test
2. Opioid Practice Self-Assessment Tool
3. Opioid Chart Review Checklist

Participants:
We are recruiting a small, diverse sample of family physicians in Ontario who care for patients on long term opioid therapy for chronic pain, and practice within 2 hours of driving distance from Toronto.

Project Status:
The project is funded for two years between April 2015 and March 2017.  Recruitment began in February 2016 and will close in May 2016. Completion of data collection is expected in November 2016.
